We've survived the Derecho!

Thursday morning our area was hit with a large thunderstorm system, known as a derecho, as it swept from Iowa to Indiana in the Midwest. A derecho is a cluster of continuous thunderstorms spanning 400 x 60 miles with winds of at least 58 mph. It was disheartening seeing the aftermath of the storm with the majority of our fresh transplants laying horizontal in the field.

After the storm we immediately set to work on damage control. It took almost 8 hours working in the soaked clay field to get all of the plants vertical again. Some plants were fairly battered needing much more care than others.

A photo of the hemp field after repairs from the Derecho damage were made. The young hemp plants only a foot tall have been set upright again. Some plants are missing leaves and others are propped with supports as roots are not yet established in the clay soil. Larger debris has been removed, but the entire field is littered with small branches leaves and pine needles blown from the trees.
